Over 100 years ago my grandfather,
GIOVANNI CASTRONUOVO,
emigrated from the Italian province of Basilicata to the USA. In America, he used
the name "John Castronuovo" (or sometimes, simply "John Castro").
Grandfather arrived at Ellis Island
(New York Harbor) in the year 1906, aboard a ship called the "Citta` di Napoli."
The record
of the ship's manifest is still stored at Ellis Island, and you may view it online by doing the following:
Go to: http://www.ellisislandrecords.com Find "Log in" at the upper right of the screen; click on "Log in" and then enter my username
and password, which are Castro333 and oluna, respectively.
Then, ask to start a 'new search' and fill in the following information:
-> For the first name, enter GIOVANNI.
-> For the last name, enter CASTRONNORO. Why must you enter this "incorrect"
spelling? Because grandfather's exact last name (Castronuovo) was transcribed erroneously when the people at Ellis
Island set up their site in the 1990's. You will see on the ship's manifest, however, that back in 1906 his
name was recorded correctly, in longhand, by the agent who interviewed him.
-> For the exact year of birth,
enter 1889.
When his record comes up, find the column named "Ship's
Manifest," (2nd from the right) and click on VIEW.
When the
next screen appears, it will look (at first) as though you need to buy something to view the ship's manifest -- but that
is not the case. Simply click on the little magnifying glass in
order to enlarge the photograph of the actual manifest.
When the enlarged manifest
appears, scroll down to # 16, and you will find grandfather's name. Then move to the
right, where you'll find the record of his hometown, his profession, the address in NY to which he was headed, etc
etc.
